In A Midsummer Night’s Dream Shakespeare mentions several of our beautiful British flowers. I have developed the idea of a Fairy Ring for my miniatures and have created three flowers that can sit amongst the fairies. |
 |
Marsh Mallow
Our Mallow petals have a rich sheen and the stamens are made of tiny glass beads on fine wire.
The Romans considered a dish of Marsh Mallow to be a delicacy, and in England sweet-meat makers created a confectionery paste from Marsh Mallow root.
Perhaps Titania’s fairy attendants will create a Mallow feast for their Queen?!

Opium Poppy
The Opium Poppy is wonderful plant and its Latin name, Papaver somniferum, roughly translates as “sleep-bringing poppy” due to it’s narcotic properties.
It has a wide range of medicinal uses, however I’m sure it would have helped to produce some wonderful dreams one Midsummer Night!

Hops and Dogwood with Moth
The Hop plant (Humulus lupulus) is a fast growing, climbing plant which is probably best known for its uses in brewing beer. The female flower buds have a sedative effect - probably similar to drinking several pints of beer!
Dogwood (Cornus sanguinea) is another plant with an interesting array of uses! Sanguinea means “blood-red” which is a reference to its coloured stems. Dogwood is also known as the “wax tree” as it was used to make lamp oil due to it’s waxy nature. Perhaps Shakespeare’s fairies used Dogwood to make fairy lamps to light the forest at night?!

The Dew Fairy makes an excellent new baby, christening, or birthday gift.
